Building a cohesive and effective team, especially a large one, requires thoughtful strategies that foster communication, trust, and collaboration. You want everyone moving in the same direction – toward your stated goals – and the more people you have on a team, the more challenging that can become.
The good news, however, is that the larger the team, the more likely you are to have a wide range of skills, talents, and strengths.
StrengthsFinder® As A Team Building Tool
But what are those strengths? Under normal circumstances, it might take time to identify people’s strengths, and some people’s talents might lie dormant or never be discovered. And even if you, as a leader of the team, knew each person’s strengths, how could you effectively communicate those strengths to the entire team?
Fortunately, the StrengthsFinder® assessment offers a simple solution. Have everyone on your large team take the assessment, and share those results with the entire team or with sub-teams. Now known as CliftonStrengths®, the StrengthsFinder® personality test was developed by the Gallup® organization in 2001 and has now been taken by more than 31 million people. The test consists of 177 questions that take about 35-45 minutes to complete online. From there, StrengthsFinder® identifies a person’s top 5 strengths, out of a possible 34 strengths.
With the information at hand from StrengthsFinder®, it’s easy to understand and share among team members. Soon, you’ll know that some people are great at ideation, while others excel at communication. Some are analytical, while others are contextual. Some have self-assurance, while others have empathy. Some are strategic, while others are futuristic.
No one strength is better or worse than another, they’re just different – and that’s the main takeaway from StrengthsFinder®. The assessment helps people appreciate their own strengths and the diverse strengths of other people on the team. Like no other team building activity, StrengthsFinder® can help promote team bonding, improve communication, and encourage collaboration.
